NUS students have built a quadcopter drone that can be powered solely by sunlight. This prototype is a proof-of-concept to show that solar-powered drones can become a reality.

  1. I would love for this UAV to come to EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wisconsin sometime to showcase this design. Even though that may be far from real considering the amount of travel and shipping costs I congratulate the success of this project.

  2. I call bullshit. There is no way these cells can provide enough power to sustain flight in this way. On a fixed wing, sure. But no way is this thing powered only by solar cells, unless they are simply using the cells to charge a battery before flight, and then must land again to charge before flying again.

  3. Then a butterfly flapped it's wings and the ensuing wild gust blew this drone out of the sky.

    Cool? Yeah. Practical for any purpose at all? Nope.

    The lighter and bigger surface a drone has, the worse it will perform in any wind.
